ROLL = Music <> Poetry

Roll Music is an eclectic blend of sound & word that bridges the gap between music and poetry.

It follows and expands on the traditions of bard and troubadour, and continues beyond the genres of rap and talking blues, utilizing noise, sound, music and words to create imagery within an auditory landscape.

Roll Music is unformatted, has no target audience and makes no attempt to follow any styles or trends.

It’s sometimes polished, sometimes raw, unfailingly honest.

It sometimes rocks, but it’s not Rock Music. It’s the other part of of Rock ’n Roll.

Roll Music is where rhythm meets word and mind meets heart.

The ROLL project was a musical experiment that I started in 1994 when I met Erik. I was immediately struck by the sound of his voice and his style of speech when reading his poetry.

I suggested an experiment to record some of his poems. As he read from his book, there was a certain cadence in his performance.

I adapted a metronome to this cadenza and then recorded his poetry.

Initially we worked on a tabletop, in his kitchen in Amsterdam, using a cassette recorder with 4 tracks. Those recordings turned out so powerful that they resulted in this project which tried a new way of linking poetry to music.

After a long period of playing with the idea, we finally succeeded in making a CD in 2003. Recordings were made in my then home studio in the Belgian countryside, with very limited resources.

The concept is nicely explained in the description, in the artist’s own handwriting, about ROLL music.
